Gas growth on the horizon
A solid exploration drilling programme in Myanmar will identify new gas resources, likely sufficient to support new expo rts to either China or Thailand within the next ten years. Exploration drilling in Myanmar continues to deliver positive results, likely leading to an uptick in new wells over the back end of 2017. Woodside Petroleum is leading the charge following a gas discovery at its Pyi Thit-1 well in Block A-6 in early August ( see 'Exploration Focus: Low Risk Or High Impact ' , August 7). The company is planning two further wells at Pyi Tharyar-1 in the same block and Khayang Swal-1 in Block AD-7. Both are targeting high-impact discoveries with resource volumes upwards of 50.0bcm, which may be followed with further appraisal drilling. With gas the primary target of Myanmar's offshore, resource size will be critical to determining the commerciality of new discoveries. Offshore infrastructure is sparse, with only four offshore platforms dotted across the country, where there is marginal scope for tie-backs to leverage spare capacity. Given the upside to resources, companies such as Total are using satellite field resources to maintain output. In May, the company tied-back the Badamyar gas field to the Yadana platform, extending the project's output of 8.0bcm to beyond 2020. Similarly, PTTEP is progressing the phase 1C and 1D of the Zawtika project again to maintain output levels, with production expected from late 2017.
