Analysis of the port of Tanjung Priok's strategy in container port competition
The Port of Tanjung Priok is managed by the Indonesia Port Corporation, and is a leading port in Indonesia. Because of the geographical position in the trade route by the Strait of Malacca, this port is facing competition with other ports such as Port of Singapore (PSA) and Port of Tanjung Pelepas. This research analyses the strategy that has been conducted by the Port of Tanjung in order to compete in South East Asia. A qualitative method by observation of Port of Tanjung Priok was conducted in this research. SWOT analysis was used to analysis the strategy that is affected by the issues on port competition. Among the other competitors, PSA and Port Tanjung Pelepas have better competitive strength than the Port of Tanjung Priok, which still has to invest in their facilities to improve the capacity of the container terminal. Some improvement has been conducted by the Port of Tanjung Priok in order to sustain their port operation, such as improvement in the human resources by engaging some training and postgraduate scholarship programmes and the development of an information technology system. However, the Port of Tanjung Priok’s facilities and capacity are inadequate to accommodate the growth of container trade. The most important strategy of Port Tanjung Priok is the New Priok project, which will expand the capacity of Port of Tanjung Priok by 12.5 million TEUs. With the New Priok project, the Port of Tanjung Priok is ready to accommodate the large container ships and compete with other ports.
