Challenges in the maritime-land interface : maritime freight and logistics
As the containerization of the global economy reaches a phase of maturity and rationalization, ports find themselves embedded in ever changing commercial environment where logistics is at the forefront. The global market place, with powerful and footloose players, extensive business networks within complex logistics systems, have a dramatic impact on the raison d'ĂȘtre of seaports. The new logistics environment creates a high degree of uncertainty and leaves port managers puzzled with the question how to respond effectively to market dynamics. There is no reason to believe that ports can develop themselves irrespective of such new trends in business logistics. Port authorities and port management teams are forced to re-assess their role and to specify competencies that should lead to competitive advantage and should position the port for growth. Along the major economic regions of the world, the maritime-land interface represents a crucial challenge being addressed to secure economic growth (notably in terms of foreign direct investments) and to participate in international trade (in terms of export oriented strategies). This paper provides an overview on the economic and logistics market developments affecting seaports. In the first part key market developments in trade and logistics are identified. The second part attempts to analyze how the economic and logistics trends affect seaports around the world. Particular emphasis is on the maritime-land interface.
