Logistics management and costs of biomass fuel supply

This paper addresses the supply chain considerations and costs of using biomass fuel on a large scale for electricity generation at power stations. It is at this scale of use that the logistics of biomass fuel supply are likely to be both complex and potentially problematic, and logistics costs will have an important bearing on the total delivered cost of biomass (i.e. the total cumulative cost of biomass fuel at the point of delivery to a power station). It is important to recognise that logistics costs and the integrated management of logistics activities can be vital to the success or failure of a product or industry, especially in the case of a fledgling industry (Ballou, 1992).
