Logistics in Korea: current state and future directions
Korean companies have recently realized that logistics is an important consideration in a global economy and made efforts to improve their logistical systems by investing money in logistical facilities and equipment such as automated warehouses, material handling equipment, and logistical information systems[1]. Although these efforts resulted in some visible outcomes, one may wonder whether the increase in investment necessarily leads to improvement of logistics performance. While the US and European companies are busy with developing and implementing quick response systems, efficient consumer response, cross docking and, above all, supply chain management[2-13], these concepts are not yet well recognized by Korean executives in making a strategic difference in global competitiveness[14]. This means that Korean companies, despite their consistent, remarkable progress in major industries such as electronics, shipbuilding, steel-making, and automobiles, are still behind those of other developed countries at least in their logistical practices. This empirical study identifies and surveys the logistics practices in Korean companies and compares the findings with other countries. Based on these observations, this study will propose some future directions in order to make Korean logistics competitive with world-class logistics practices.
