Hydro Dominance To Continue Amid Weak Power Sector Growth
Cambodia ' s power generation mix will be dominated by hydropower over the coming decade, accounting for more than 60% of total electricity generation by 2026. Growth in the power sector will be slow, as project delays and an unattractive investment environment clouds the sector ' s expansion. Cambodia's power sector will remain heavily reliant on hydropower over our 10-year forecast period, with hydropower accounting for nearly over 60% of the power generation mix in 2026. Underpinning this view is our expectation that the Cambodian government will focus its power sector expansion strategy on hydropower development, in order to capitalise on the hydropower potential in the country (estimated at 10GW) and the low levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) as the facilities can typically moperate over several decades after amortisation. Ramping up hydropower capacity to meet rising power demand and support economic growth continues to be a key theme for regional economies across the Lower Mekong Basin, not just in Cambodia - but also in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam ( see ' Power Export Ambitions To Drive Hydropower Expansion ' , December 1 2016).
