Power Generation, FSRUs To Underpin EM LNG Growth
Strong LNG demand growth in Asia's less-established LNG players including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam will absorb some of the forthcoming oversupply in the global LNG market. FSRUs will provide these players with cheaper, quicker access to LNG, building a platform for stronger offtake in the power, industrial, residential and transportation sectors. Asia's LNG demand will grow at an average annual rate of 5.1% over the next 10 years, from 255.4bcm in 2017 to 391.6bcm in 2026. The region's more established LNG importers such as Japan, South Korea and China will remain the biggest demand markets in absolute volume terms. Growth in China will be particularly robust, and allow the country to overtake South Korea by 2018 to become the region's second largest LNG importer. Crucial incremental demand will come from the less-established LNG players as slower economic and demographic growth, rising energy efficiencies and competition from coal and renewables drive limit growth among the traditional importers. The likes of Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam are set to start importing LNG for the first time (excluding Pakistan which began in 2015), adding about 32.0bcm of LNG imports between them over our 10-year forecast period.
