Sarawak Acquires Bakun Hydropower Plant
The state government of Sarawak, through Sarawak Energy, acquired the 2.4GW Bakun hydropower project in Sarawak on the island of Borneo from the Malaysian federal government. Sarawak Energy bought the entire equity shares of Sarawak Hidro, owner and operator of the Bakun hydropower facility, in a deal worth about MYR2.5bn (USD583mn). The acquisition was financed through a mix of Sarawak Energy's internally generated funds and external financing. The takeover includes land surrounding the dam and reservoir area. The takeover will allow the firm to consolidate power production and fully own and operate all major electricity generation facilities in Sarawak, according to Sarawak Energy CEO Sharbini Suhaili (HydroWorld). Separately, construction on the Baleh hydroelectric project is expected to start in October 2018, with commissioning slated for 2025. The main civil works contract for the 1.29GW Baleh plant, also in Sarawak, was awarded earlier in August to a joint venture owned by China Gezhouba Group and Untang Jaya.
