Global industry overview - container industry overview Q211
BMI's outlook for the container s hipping indus try in Q211 remains cautious . We expect to s ee s low consumer demand, demand-supply imbalance and continued rate fluctuations . Although mos t of the big shipping lines reported a return to profit in 2010 , recovering from the major losses of 2009 , BMI maintains its view that the recovery in container shipping is not yet as sured. Our view is based on our bellwethers for the Eas t to Wes t container shipping indus try - the US port of Los Ang eles and the Suez Canal - and consumer entiment, which drives demand for containeris ed g oods . Although through put at LA and through the Suez Canal showed a vast improvement on 2009 , it was nevertheles s s till s hort of pre-downturn levels . Consumer sentiment in both the US and Europe, the two crucial Wes tern markets for container s hipping , remains s lug g is h. Concerns about unemployment and a proliferation of aus terity packag es mean that cons umers will remain cautious , indicating that a return to pre-20 0 9 levels of g rowth will not be achieved in the s hort term. Recovering finances have s een many container lines return to the s hipyards and increas e their orderbooks . Despite the continued threat of overcapacity, lines do not appear to have learned les s ons from the downturn, with s ome of the major lines rus hing to order meg a-ves sels .
