Global industry overview - container shipping: 2013 offers promise, but will be tough
The financial res ults of the major box s hipping companies have s tarted to s how g limmers of hope, with s ome operators even manag ing to g et back into the black. BMI warns , however, that this development has little to do with improvement in the g lobal trade outlook or the s ector finally tackling overcapacity issues ; rather, container lines have been dras tically cutting their operating costs , implementing short-terms trategies to manage capacity and boost rates and have been aided in the third quarter of 20 12 by a drop in the bunker price These strateg ies to aid container lines ' ailing bottom lines are s hort term and are already s tarting to unravel: bunker fuel prices are ticking up once more; trade volumes , while g rowing , are continuing to s low; and overcapacity remains the s ector's big g es t problem and one that is expected to become more acute in 2013 as more ships of larger classes are brought online. In s hort, 2013 looks set to be another difficult year for the container shipping sector.
Q212 results (lates t available) haves hown some improvement, with container lines now s killed at finding ways to cut costs , having plenty of experience of slowing trade volumes and overcapacity. Nearly all lines to have announced their res ults for this quarter have witnes s ed year-on-year (y-o-y) improvements (APL being the exception) with s ome even pos ting a profit for the quarter.
