Hapag -Lloyd has a 160 -year history, dating to the foundation of German lines Hamburg -Amerikanis che-Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesells chaft (Hamburg -America Line, or Hapag ) and Norddeuts cher Lloyd (NDL) in 1847 and 1857 respectively. The two lines merged in 1970 to form Hapag -Lloyd. In 1997 the line became subsidiary of German tourism g iant TUI, which purchas ed 10 0% of its s hares in 2002. In 2005 Hapag -Lloyd acquired Canadian liner CP Ships .
