The Relationship between Economic Activity and Freight Transport
In his book of 1979, Marvin Manheim put the interrelationship between the transportation system of a region and the socioeconomic system at the heart of transportation systems analysis: ‘The transportation system of a region is tightly interrelated with the socioeconomic system. y This interrelationship is fundamental to our view of transportation systems analysis’ (Manheim, 1979, p. 12). Traditionally, the analysis is split into two parts: one focussing on the contribution of freight transport to economic growth and economic structures, and one considering the impact of economic activity on the demand for freight transport.
