CONTAINER TERMINALS AND UTILISATION OF FACILITIES
The central subject of this paper is the efficiency of container terminals. Based on a database of European maritime, rail, and barge container terminals a technical efficien- cy analysis has been made. The analysis in this paper demonstrates that large differences in terminal efficiency can be found in Europe among maritime container terminals. Terminals that specialise in containers only perform better than terminals that also handle non- containerised goods. No clear differences exist between the European countries. Also the efficiency of rail terminals is quite in line. If rail terminals and maritime terminals are compared, it shows that the variation in the technical efficiency for maritime terminals is larger and that terminals in larger ports are more efficient than terminals in smaller ports.
