A Survey of Singaporean Chinese Investors in Mainland China and their Knowledge of the Chinese Language
ntroduction
The world’s most popular country, China, implemented the open door policy in 1979. Since then China has been gradually opening up her economy to attract foreign investments. Recently, China’s World Trade Organization (WTO) entry has boosted its economic growth and advanced its legal and governmental reforms. Bilateral trade between China and Singapore has flourished since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The bilateral trade between these two countries was S$28.1 billion in 2002 placing Singapore as the fourth major trading partner with China. With the remarkable GDP growth and flourishing FDI inflows, China has become the rising powerhouse of the world in the early 21 century. In the midst of the recent world recession China continues to forecast a steady growth of 7% per year. China’s emergence has brought tons of opportunities for investors who wish to expand their overseas business. In Singapore, Chinese Singaporeans generally learn the Chinese Language in school
